Plastic Valve Size Selection by Pipe O.D. Standard

Selecting the correct plastic valve requires more than matching an inch size, DN designation or metric number. A valve described as 2 inches, DN50 or d63 may belong to different dimensional systems, and the actual pipe outside diameter can vary according to the applicable standard.

ASTM, JIS, BS, CNS and metric GB, DIN, EN or ISO piping systems do not always use the same outside diameter for a similar commercial size. This difference directly affects valve sockets, union ends, fittings and transition connections.

This guide helps distributors, OEM buyers, engineers and project partners identify the correct pipe size and connection standard before selecting PVC-U, CPVC, PPR or PP valves and fittings.

The metric column represents the common millimetre-based size series used in many GB, DIN, EN and ISO piping systems. Values shown in the same row belong to a similar commercial size group, but they are not direct dimensional equivalents.

Important: Values appearing in the same row are commercial selection references, not interchangeable socket dimensions. For example, a metric d110 valve socket is not the same as a 4-inch ASTM socket, even though both may be associated with DN100 applications.

The JIS, BS and CNS values shown are practical pipe-end and valve-selection references. Final compatibility should always be confirmed against the applicable pipe specification, valve drawing and socket tolerance.

How to Read Metric Size, NPS and DN

Metric size, NPS and DN are different ways of describing the approximate commercial size of a piping component. They should not be treated as three identical measurements.

For example, metric d63, NPS 2 in and DN50 may be grouped into a similar market size. However, the actual outside diameter may be 63 mm in a metric system, 60.33 mm under ASTM IPS, or approximately 60.2 mm in the referenced JIS, BS or CNS connection series.

A valve should therefore be selected according to the required connection standard and actual pipe O.D., not DN alone.

Metric Standards: GB, DIN, EN and ISO

The metric size series shown in the main chart is commonly used across GB, DIN, EN and ISO-based plastic piping systems. Typical dimensions include d20, d25, d32, d40, d50, d63, d75, d90 and d110.

In these systems, the size generally refers directly to the nominal outside diameter of the pipe. A d63 pipe therefore has an outside diameter of approximately 63 mm.

DIN, EN, ISO and GB should not be treated as one single product standard. They may share the same metric O.D. series while applying to different materials, wall-thickness classes, joining methods and operating conditions.

A metric d63 PVC-U pipe and a metric d63 PPR pipe may share the same nominal outside diameter, but their valves and fittings are not automatically interchangeable. The material, socket geometry, joining method, wall thickness, SDR or pipe series and pressure rating must also be confirmed.

ASTM IPS Pipe Sizes

ASTM PVC and CPVC schedule-pipe systems commonly use the IPS or NPS outside-diameter family. The nominal inch size is not the actual outside diameter.

For example:

  • 1-inch ASTM IPS pipe has an O.D. of 33.40 mm.
  • 2-inch ASTM IPS pipe has an O.D. of 60.33 mm.
  • 4-inch ASTM IPS pipe has an O.D. of 114.30 mm.

The outside diameter remains controlled within the IPS dimensional family, while the wall thickness changes according to the pipe schedule.

ASTM D1785 PVC

ASTM D1785 applies to PVC Schedule 40, Schedule 80 and Schedule 120 pipe using the IPS dimensional family. Valve selection must match the ASTM socket size and the required operating pressure.

ASTM F441 CPVC

ASTM F441 applies to CPVC Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 pipe using the IPS dimensional family. It should not be confused with ASTM D2846 CPVC CTS, which uses smaller Copper Tube Size dimensions.

CPVC CTS Size Reference

ASTM D2846 CPVC uses the Copper Tube Size dimensional system. CTS and IPS products with the same nominal inch size have different actual outside diameters.

A 1-inch CPVC CTS socket cannot be used with a 1-inch ASTM IPS pipe. The nominal inch description is the same, but the outside diameters differ by more than 4 mm.

Larger CPVC schedule-pipe applications may use ASTM F441 IPS dimensions where that system is specified. ASTM F441 is a separate IPS system rather than a continuation of ASTM D2846 CTS.

JIS, BS and CNS Connection Differences

JIS, British and CNS plastic piping systems may use outside diameters that are close to ASTM or metric dimensions, but even small differences can affect socket fit, solvent-cement gaps and valve-end compatibility.

The 2-1/2-inch size clearly illustrates why nominal size alone is insufficient:

  • ASTM: 73.03 mm
  • JIS: 76.2 mm
  • BS: 75.2 mm
  • CNS: 76.2 mm

These differences are significant enough to require separate valve socket designs or correctly engineered transition components.

Why Similar Pipe Sizes Are Not Interchangeable

Two pipes may appear to belong to the same size group while still requiring different valve ends. Compatibility depends on more than outside diameter.

Socket Fit Control

The valve socket must match the pipe outside diameter and permitted tolerance. Small dimensional differences can affect insertion, bonding clearance and connection reliability.

Socket Insertion Depth

Different standards may use different socket depths. Similar outside diameters do not guarantee adequate engagement length or a secure valve-to-pipe connection.

Pipe Wall Series

Schedule, SDR and pipe series affect wall thickness, internal diameter and pressure performance. Matching outside diameter alone does not confirm system compatibility.

Connection Method

PVC-U and CPVC typically use solvent cement, PPR uses heat fusion, and PP compression systems use mechanical sealing. The connection method must match the product design.

How to Select the Correct Plastic Valve

1. Identify the pipe standard

Confirm whether the pipe follows a metric GB, DIN, EN or ISO system, ASTM IPS, ASTM CTS, JIS, BS or CNS dimensional convention.

2. Measure the actual pipe O.D.

When the standard is uncertain, measure the pipe outside diameter with an appropriate calliper. Measurements should be taken across several positions to check pipe roundness.

3. Confirm the valve-end type

Plastic valves may be supplied with:

  • Solvent-cement sockets
  • Heat-fusion sockets
  • NPT threads
  • BSPT threads
  • Flanged ends
  • Single-union ends
  • True-union ends
  • Compression connections

The connection type must match both the pipe material and the dimensional standard.

4. Check pressure and temperature

Pipe O.D. selection does not establish pressure or temperature suitability. Confirm the valve pressure rating, pipe schedule or SDR, operating temperature and applicable pressure-temperature derating.

5. Confirm material compatibility

Verify the compatibility of the valve body, seals and seats with the conveyed media. Depending on the application, this may include PVC-U, CPVC, PPR, PP, PPH, EPDM, NBR or PTFE components.

6. Use a sample or approved drawing when necessary

For OEM production, regional standards or non-standard replacement projects, a physical pipe sample or approved dimensional drawing should be checked before tooling, mass production or shipment.

1. Is DN50 the same as 2 inches or d63?

DN50, 2 inches and d63 may belong to the same commercial size group, but they are not identical dimensional values. A metric d63 pipe has a 63 mm O.D., while a 2-inch ASTM IPS pipe has a 60.33 mm O.D.

2. Why is a 4-inch ASTM pipe not the same as metric d110?

A 4-inch ASTM IPS pipe has an outside diameter of 114.30 mm. A metric d110 pipe has an outside diameter of 110 mm. Their sockets are therefore not interchangeable.

3. Do DIN and ISO use the same metric sizes?

Many DIN, EN and ISO plastic pipe standards use common metric outside diameters such as d20, d25, d32, d63 and d110. However, the standards may apply to different materials, pressure classes and joining methods.

4. Can a d63 PPR valve be used with d63 PVC-U pipe?
