Global Piping Systems Compatibility Matrix

Overview of international sizing conventions, geographic adoption, and mandatory connection limits.

Standard System & Primary Markets Baseline Designation Size Scope Critical Jointing & Sizing Limits
ASTM IPS (Iron Pipe Size)
North America, Latin America, Middle East, global industrial EPC lines
Nominal Pipe Size (NPS, in) 1/2″ to 24″ Dedicated OD Baseline: Incompatible with ISO metric sockets. Direct solvent welding or push-fit joining is impossible; requires transition flanges or dedicated crossover adapters.
ASTM CTS (Copper Tube Size)
Global domestic hot- and cold-water distribution
Copper Tube Size (CTS, in) 3/8″ to 2″ OD = Nominal + 1/8″: Strictly incompatible with industrial Schedule 80 IPS fittings and valves despite sharing identical nominal inch designations.
ISO / EN / DIN Metric Series
Europe, Middle East, CIS, Africa, Asia-Pacific
Nominal OD (dn, mm) 12 mm to 1000 mm Even when outside diameters align, wall thickness and socket insertion depth must be verified against design pressure classes (PN / SDR).
BS Current Metric Series
UK & Commonwealth modern new-builds
Follows BS EN ISO 1452-2 (Metric) 12 mm to 1000 mm Fully aligned with ISO metric standards. Do not specify or purchase using outdated British imperial callouts.
BS Historic Imperial Reference
Commonwealth municipal revamp & plant retrofits
Historic Imperial Nominal (in) 1/2″ to 12″ Withdrawn Standard (BS 3505): Existing pipelines require caliper measurement before ordering replacement valves; connect via dedicated adapters.
JIS Series (Japanese Standards)
Japan, specialty chemical machinery, semiconductor equipment
JIS Nominal Callout (A) 13A to 600A Nominal Callout ≠ OD: Cannot fit ISO or ASTM sockets directly; requires dedicated JIS-socket valves and fittings.

ASTM / North American Systems (IPS Baseline)

Applies to PVC-U (ASTM D1785) and industrial CPVC (ASTM F441). Built on Iron Pipe Size (IPS) baselines; does not interchange with ISO metric dn sockets.

ASTM CTS: Domestic CPVC Plumbing

Covers ASTM D2846 hot- and cold-water distribution (3/8″ to 2″). Actual OD equals nominal size + 1/8″. Do not connect to Schedule 80 IPS sockets.

ISO / Metric & European Systems (dn Baseline)

Governed by ISO 1452, EN ISO 1452, and DIN 8062 (PVC-U), as well as ISO 15493 (Industrial). Nominal outside diameter dn is measured in millimeters.

Historic British Imperial PVC-U (BS 3505 Reference)

For maintenance and revamps of legacy Commonwealth systems. BS 3505 has been officially superseded by BS EN ISO 1452-2 (Metric).

Technical FAQ: Common Sizing Pitfalls

Practical engineering guidance for cross-standard field verifications.

Verdict: No. ASTM NPS 2 OD is 60.33 mm; ISO dn 63 OD is 63.00 mm. The 2.67 mm mismatch prevents insertion. Forcing or shaving pipe walls compromises joint integrity and causes pressure failures. Use an ASTM-to-metric transition flange or crossover adapter.

Verdict: Distinct applications. Plumbing lines use ASTM D2846 CTS (1″ OD = 28.58 mm); industrial chemical lines use ASTM F441 IPS (1″ OD = 33.40 mm). Check project submittals to verify whether CTS or Schedule 80 IPS is specified.

Verdict: No, wall thickness must also be verified. Wall thickness defines the SDR ratio and allowable PN rating. JARO Industry recommends selecting valves with a pressure class equal to or higher than the system’s maximum design peak pressure.
